John Prine。
John Prine
そんなある日、The Beatlesの「Across the Universe」を聴いた。
John Lennon
Hello in there.
『Hello in There』。

Sam Stone
「Sam Stone」。

🎬️Ron Kovic
🎬 BACK TO THE RECORD
Oliver Stone
「Sam Stone」
John Prine。
Ebert
John Prine
「Hello in There」も「Sam Stone」も「Angel from Montgomery」も、この一枚に入っている。
John Prine、

The Day the Paperboy Made the Paper
Chicago, in the 1950s.
A twelve-year-old boy carries newspapers down the hallway of a nursing home.
John Prine.
A friend has asked him to help with a paper route. Here, leaving a newspaper at the entrance will not do. He must deliver it to each resident’s room.
After a while, the elderly residents recognize him. When visitors arrive, they introduce the boy as family.
“He’s my nephew.”
“He’s like a grandson to me.”
Of course, he is neither. He is simply the boy who brings the paper. But for the residents, his visit is a precious moment of human company.
Perhaps this is where Prine first understood that sometimes all a person needs is for somebody to come by.
About a decade passes.
In 1967, after military service, Prine is working as a mail carrier in Chicago. Every day he walks the same streets, delivering letters, then walking some more.
He called the job “a library with no books.” He could make up stories in his head as he walked.
One day he hears the Beatles’ “Across the Universe.” The deep echo around John Lennon’s voice makes him imagine calling into a hollow log.
Hello in there.
Is anybody there?
And the faces of the nursing-home residents return to him. They had been waiting in those rooms for someone to visit.
At twenty-two, Prine writes “Hello in There,” a song about the loneliness of old age, although he himself is still young.
Around the same time he writes “Sam Stone,” about a Vietnam veteran and his family, and “Angel from Montgomery,” about a woman worn down by everyday life.
By day, the mailman delivers letters to other people’s homes. By night, he sings about lives very different from his own.
THE CHATTERBOX · ☕ COFFEE BREAK
A detour from “Sam Stone” to the movies.
“Sam Stone” tells of a soldier returning from Vietnam, struggling with addiction as his family life falls apart.
And what a gentle melody. War’s cruelty, sung so softly. It is as though the suffering lies just beneath the ordinary routines that carry on as if nothing has happened.
That reminds me of the film Born on the Fourth of July, directed by Oliver Stone and starring Tom Cruise. It is based on the autobiography of veteran Ron Kovic, and has no direct connection to “Sam Stone,” but both inhabit the same wounded America.
And then there’s Tom Cruise.
The man who starred in Top Gun went on, just three years later, to play the lead in an antiwar film.
Not exactly consistent.
Well, he did Top Gun first, so perhaps he couldn’t help it.
…And then, in 2022, he made Top Gun: Maverick.
So much for consistency.

🎬 “Sam Stone” (1971)
Prine explained that the song was not based on a single individual, but drew on several people, including friends who returned from Vietnam and men he had known in the military.
🎬 Ron Kovic, Born on the Fourth of July (1976)
Kovic’s autobiography recounts his own experiences. Oliver Stone adapted it for film in 1989, with Kovic also participating in the screenplay.
Two works, two different ways of depicting the wounds of the same era.
🎬 BACK TO THE RECORD
Speaking of Oliver Stone, there was also Platoon.
That film confronts us with the horrors of war on screen.
But John Prine does something different. He plays his guitar and sings in that gentle voice.
The man has come home. His family is there. Ordinary life resumes.
And still, the war has not ended inside him.
Listening to “Sam Stone,” I think about how war does not exist only on a battlefield.
The war does not end for those who come home.
Nor does it end for those waiting for someone who will never return.
1970.
The Fifth Peg, a small folk club in Chicago.
One evening, film critic Roger Ebert walks in. He had planned to see a movie, but instead stops at the club to pass the time. A young man is playing guitar and singing.
John Prine.
Ebert is astonished. How can someone so young understand so much about other people’s lives?
Instead of going to the movies, the critic writes about the singer.
On October 9, 1970—the day before Prine’s twenty-fourth birthday—a newspaper in Chicago publishes an article introducing him.
The boy who once delivered newspapers is now in one.
Later, Kris Kristofferson also champions Prine. In 1971, he releases his self-titled debut album. “Hello in There,” “Sam Stone,” and “Angel from Montgomery” are all on that record.
The voice of the boy who once walked those nursing-home hallways has become a record.
Did those elderly residents ever hear it? Did they know the boy who brought their newspapers had written a song like this?
October 10, 2026. John Prine’s eightieth birthday.
Thank you, John Prine, for turning the lives you encountered as a boy into songs, and for sending melodies into the world that keep company with sorrow and loneliness.
The boy who delivered newspapers grew up to appear in one.
And fifty-six years later, his songs are still reaching somebody.

Born October 10, 1954, in Bloomington, Indiana. His father was a surgeon.
Pasadena, California, in the 1970s. Brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen, bassist Michael Anthony, and singer David Lee Roth. Those four were Van Halen.
They made their debut in 1978. If Eddie’s guitar stunned the world with sound, it was Roth who set the stage on fire. Split-leg jumps, nonstop talk, that big laugh.
In 1984, “Jump” went to No. 1 in the U.S. It became Van Halen’s one and only No. 1 single.
Then, in 1985, Roth left the band.
— And now, a famous story.
Van Halen’s tour contract contained this line: “There will be no brown M&M’s in the backstage area, upon pain of forfeiture of the show, with full compensation.”
A rock star’s whim. Everyone laughed.
But in his 1997 autobiography, Crazy from the Heat, Roth wrote that it was “a little test.”
Van Halen’s shows were enormous, with lights and gear on a scale few venues had seen. The contract was packed with detailed instructions about weight and power. Somewhere in the middle, he slipped in the line about M&M’s.
If he found a brown one backstage, the venue had not read the contract properly. Then the whole production had to be checked from the beginning. That way, Roth wrote, you were guaranteed to find a technical error.
According to Roth’s own account, that is exactly what happened at a university arena in Pueblo, Colorado. The venue had not read the contract. The heavy stage sank into the newly laid floor, causing eighty thousand dollars’ worth of damage.
And in the backstage bowl, there were brown M&M’s. Furious, Roth trashed the dressing room. In his words, that was “twelve thousand dollars’ worth of fun.”
The newspapers, however, reported that Van Halen had caused $85,000 of backstage damage over M&M’s. Roth wrote that the report was not accurate.
He looks like he’s fooling around, but he is careful. He is careful, and still he is fooling around. That is David Lee Roth.
There is another surprising side to him.
In 2004, Roth was riding ambulances in New York City. He was training to become a paramedic.
The Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn. Several nights a week he went out with ambulance crews, logging more than 200 rides. In the Bronx, it was reported, he used a defibrillator to save a man having a heart attack.
He said: “Not once has anyone recognized me, which is perfect for me.”
As a young man, he had also worked as a surgical orderly in Los Angeles.
In 2007, Roth rejoined Van Halen. In 2012, the band released A Different Kind of Truth, their first album with Roth on vocals in 28 years.
On October 6, 2020, Eddie Van Halen died. It was four days before Roth’s 66th birthday.
After that, Roth spoke of retiring. His “final shows” in Las Vegas were canceled in 2022.
Then, in May 2025, at a rock festival in Maryland, Roth returned to the stage for the first time in five years. “We’ve reached the end of my first retirement,” he said. And he added: “How many retirements did Rocky have? Nine?”
In the spring of 2026, he went on tour again, though many of the summer shows were called off.
He announces his retirement, and then he comes back. His 72nd birthday. How will he make his next entrance? Wondering about that is part of the fun with this man.
「Cry to Me」(1962年)。 「Everybody Needs Somebody to Love」。 「Everybody Needs Somebody to Love」はThe Rolling Stonesがカヴァーし、映画『ブルース・ブラザース』でも歌われた。
地元のDJ、Rockin’ Robinに呼ばれた公演で、Burkeは「King of Rock and Soul」として戴冠した。
2002年には、アルバム『Don’t Give Up on Me』で見事に復活する。
Born March 21, 1940, in Philadelphia. Some sources give other birth years, such as 1936.
He was a “bishop” from the day he was born. His grandmother, it is said, consecrated the newborn baby a bishop.
At seven he stood in the pulpit and was called the “Boy Wonder Preacher.” At twelve he became a pastor, and he also preached on the radio.
In 1960 he signed with Atlantic Records. The voice trained in church became soul.
“Cry to Me” (1962). “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love.” “Everybody Needs Somebody to Love” was covered by the Rolling Stones and sung in the film The Blues Brothers. “Cry to Me” became a hit all over again in the film Dirty Dancing.
Atlantic’s great producer Jerry Wexler called him “the greatest male soul singer of all time.”
And then, the crown.
The Royal Theater in Baltimore. At a show where he was brought in by local DJ Rockin’ Robin, Burke was crowned “the King of Rock and Soul.”
According to Burke, the crown was made in England, “a copy from the royal crown, King Henry VIII’s crown.” He had maybe ten or fifteen royal robes. “The insurance companies won’t allow us to wear two or three of them anymore,” he said.
The king was also a businessman.
He graduated from mortuary school and ran a funeral business in Los Angeles. He also had funeral parlors in California, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. He opened a drugstore, too. On the road, he sold chicken and pork-chop sandwiches to the musicians he traveled with. He even sold a popcorn called “Solomon’s Magic Popcorn.”
On stage, he wore a crown. Backstage, he sold sandwiches. At home, he ran a funeral business.
His family was a kingdom, too. Twenty-one children. Ninety grandchildren. Nineteen great-grandchildren.
In 2001 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2002 he made a remarkable comeback with the album Don’t Give Up on Me. Tom Waits, Van Morrison, and others wrote songs for it, and in 2003 it won a Grammy Award.
In his later years, walking became difficult, and he was wheeled to his throne to sing. He said: “God put me in this wheelchair.”
October 10, 2010. Just after his flight from the United States landed at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, he died on the plane. He was 70.
Two days later, he was due to sing in Amsterdam with the Dutch band De Dijk.
To the very end, he was on a journey. He was on his way to sing.
King Crimsonのデビュー・アルバム『In the Court of the Crimson King(クリムゾン・キングの宮殿)』が、Islandレコードから発売された。
1曲目は「21st Century Schizoid Man(21世紀のスキッツォイド・マン)」。
October 10, 1969. King Crimson’s debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King, was released on Island Records.
In the record shop, the cover hit you first. A screaming face filling the whole sleeve. Some people, it is said, bought the album on the strength of the cover alone.
The painter was Barry Godber. He was not a professional artist. He had left his course at the Chelsea School of Art and was working as a computer programmer.
Godber was a friend of lyricist Peter Sinfield. In the basement of a café on Fulham Palace Road in London, he was a regular visitor to the band’s rehearsal room.
In April 1969, he designed a “King Crimson Is…” poster printed on reflective foil. It was fly-posted on street corners around London. The flaming-eye motif from the poster also appeared on drummer Michael Giles’s bass drums.
To paint the album cover, Godber listened closely to the demo tapes. His model was himself. His own face, seen in a shaving mirror. The band called that face “Schizoid Man.”
Godber brought the finished painting to Wessex Studios, where the band was recording. Greg Lake later recalled that the face “screamed up from the floor.”
Open the sleeve, and inside there is a smiling face. According to Robert Fripp, the outside is the Schizoid Man, and the inside is the Crimson King. Cover the smiling mouth with your hand, and the eyes reveal a deep sadness. “It reflects the music,” Fripp said.
This was the only record sleeve Godber ever painted. In 1970, just a few months after the album came out, he died of a heart attack. He was still in his twenties.
Today the original painting is owned by Fripp.
The music inside lived up to the cover.
Track one: “21st Century Schizoid Man.” A distorted voice, a twisting riff, a saxophone breaking loose.
It was played by the first five. Robert Fripp on guitar. Greg Lake on bass and vocals. Ian McDonald on saxophone, flute, and Mellotron. Michael Giles on drums. And a member who played no instrument: Peter Sinfield, who wrote the lyrics and ran the lights.
Before the album came out, on July 5, 1969, they had opened for the Rolling Stones’ free concert in London’s Hyde Park. The crowd numbered in the hundreds of thousands. From that day on, everyone was talking about them.
The album reached No. 5 in the UK and No. 28 in the U.S. Pete Townshend of the Who called it “an uncanny masterpiece.”
But the first five did not last long. December 14, 1969, the Fillmore West in San Francisco. The last night of the American tour was this lineup’s final show. McDonald and Giles left, and Lake soon followed, going on to form Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
King Crimson continued after that, led by Fripp, with changing lineups. But those five left only this one album.
And the man who painted its face painted only this one cover.
This song was first written for Brigitte Bardot.
In late 1967, Serge Gainsbourg wrote “Je t’aime… moi non plus” for Bardot, and the two recorded it together. But Bardot’s husband, Gunter Sachs, objected. At Bardot’s request, Gainsbourg held the record back. The Bardot version finally came out nineteen years later, in 1986.
In 1968, on the set of the film Slogan, Gainsbourg met a young English actress named Jane Birkin. He decided to record the song again. This time, with Birkin.
They recorded it at a studio at Marble Arch in London. According to Birkin, the two sang in separate booths, like telephone boxes. When it was time to stop the heavy breathing and hit the high note, Gainsbourg waved to her from his booth.
Her high note was an octave above the Bardot version. Gainsbourg liked it that way, because it was more perverse.
Whispers, sighs, a sweet organ. When it was released in 1969, all of Europe was in an uproar.
It was banned from the airwaves in Spain, Sweden, and Italy. In Britain, the BBC announced that it was “not considered suitable for play.”
The Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano denounced it as an “obscenity.” In Italy, the head of the record company was taken to court. Birkin later said he had been jailed and excommunicated. In fact, the sentence was a suspended two months and a fine.
There were even rumors that they had really recorded it in bed. Gainsbourg’s reply: “Thank goodness it wasn’t, otherwise I hope it would have been a long-playing record.”
According to Birkin, when Gainsbourg heard of the Vatican’s condemnation, he called the Pope “our greatest PR man.”
In Britain, after the single had climbed to No. 2, Fontana pulled it from sale. The pressure came from the headquarters of its parent company, Philips. Fontana said it did not intend its products to be “the subject of controversial matters.”
So the independent label Major Minor reissued the very same recording. And in October 1969, it went to No. 1 in the UK.
It was the first time a foreign-language song had topped the British singles chart.
Birkin later looked back: “I got a bit carried away with the heavy breathing.”
Gainsbourg died in 1991, and Birkin in 2023.
Fifty-seven years ago this autumn, a whispered love song broke through the ban and reached the top of the British charts.
